How to pronounce Skopje

Youth Cultural Center

It is mostly known by its Macedonian abbreviation MKC. It is an institution that organizes different events for more than four decades now. Some of the most popular festivals are MOT “Youth Open Theatre”, an international theatre festival and CINEDAYS Festival of European Film. The graduate students of the Academy of Fine Arts have their first exhibitions here; many literary nights are hosted here as well as music concerts and much more.

Skopje Jazz Festival & OFFest

Skopje Jazz Festival was established in 1982. It is one of the leading music events in Macedonia and enjoys excellent reputation in the world. The line-up has included all jazz styles and performances by famous jazz artists from all over the world. It is a member of Europe Jazz Network.

OFFest grew up from the well-known tradition of Skopje Jazz Festival and was established in 2002 and is happening in late May or early June. It presents the “world music”, from traditional, ethno, folk, to urban and experimental music styles. Many great artists from all the continents performed at OFFest. It is a member of European Forum of Worldwide Music Festivals.

Taksirat

It is an annual music festival dedicated to alternative rock, pop, punk electronic, reggae and ska. It was established in 1999. The festival lasts for one week, usually from late November to early December on different locations in Skopje.

Besides the main music program, there are off programs like art performances, films, theater plays, promotion of new music releases, introducing young and un-established artists with the audience etc.

Buskerfest

It is an annual street festival established in 2006. It was the first, and at the same time the largest event of its kind on the Balkans and was recognized as the largest in the region. The line-up includes 50 artistic performances such as acrobats, dancers, magicians, musicians, jugglers. Ten days of a different experience on open-air location not only with street artists, but with live music, theater plays, pantomime, bazaars and workshops.

Museum of Illusions

It is another world where the whole reality turns into a virtual illusion, where everything is beyond normal. Three floors filled with illusions and lots of fun. You can make a lot of unique and unforgettable photos here.

Opening hours are every day from 8 AM to 8 PM.

Wizz Air Skopje Marathon

It is an annual marathon held every May. The first marathon race was organized in 1997, but lasted only for that year and the event was partially revived in 2007, with a half marathon-only race. It was fully restored in 2008, when three races were run: marathon, half marathon, and a 5K humanitarian race.

Skopje Marathon was in the list of Qualifying Marathon Races in 2012 for the Olympic Games in London. Since 2009 it has been a member race of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

The Skopje Marathon is one of the biggest sporting events in Macedonia.

Macedonian food

The traditional Macedonian cuisine is a combination of Balkan and Mediterranean, inherited mainly from Turkish tastes that prevailed during the time of the Ottoman rule. Most famous traditional Macedonian specialty is Tavche Gravche with some good local wine or beer.

There are beer and wine festivals in Skopje throughout the year such as Pivolend (the land of beer every September since 2008), Skopje Beer Fest (since September 2018), VinoSkop (wine promotional festival since 2007), Skopje Wine Fest, Skopje Wine Expo etc.
